231,490 marriages took place in England and Wales in 2009, the lowest number since 1895 when there were 228,204 marriages. However, in 1895 51.6 men (out of every 1,000 unmarried men) and 43.2 women (out of every 1,000 unmarried women) got married compared to 21.3 men and 19.9 women in 2009.
